Another thought: how often are you trimming the Rotala? If it's getting too tall, the lower leaves might be shaded out and dying off. Regular trimming can help keep it bushy and healthy.

Yeah, I trim mine every couple weeks. If you let it go too long, the bottom leaves just give up. It's like a bad haircut, but for plants.

Have you checked for pests? Sometimes snails or other critters can munch on the leaves. I had a mystery snail that went to town on my Rotala once. Had to relocate the little guy.
