how to Propagate water wisteria
how to Propagate water wisteria
My Water Wisteria's been growing like crazy, but I'm not sure how to propagate it properly. Should I just cut the stems and replant, or is there a better method? Tank's a 20-gallon long with CO2 injection, LED lighting, and sand substrate. Parameters are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.

Yep, cutting and replanting works fine, but you gotta make sure the stems are healthy. Trim just below a node, at least 4 inches long. I've had success with root tabs in sand, but liquid ferts help too. What's your lighting schedule? Too much can cause algae, too little slows growth.

I've tried cutting mine, but it just kinda melts. Maybe my tank's too cold? It's at 72°F with a sponge filter. No CO2, just some basic LED lights. Should I bump the temp up?

Thanks for the tip! I'm running lights for 8 hours a day. Should I adjust that?kayson wrote: ↑Mon Jun 02, 2025 9:39 am Yep, cutting and replanting works fine, but you gotta make sure the stems are healthy. Trim just below a node, at least 4 inches long. 8 hours is solid, but if you see algae, drop it to 6. For propagation, you can also float the cuttings till they root. Works great in my experience. Just keep an eye on nutrients.floodline wrote: ↑Mon Jun 02, 2025 8:44 am My Water Wisteria's been growing like crazy, but I'm not sure how to propagate it properly. Re: how to Propagate water wisteria
Floating sounds easier than replanting. Gonna try that with my next trim. My tank's got some guppies, think they'll mess with the floating cuttings?
Re: how to Propagate water wisteria
Nah, guppies usually leave 'em alone. Just make sure the cuttings aren't too small, or they might get nibbled. Also, bump your temp to 76°F if you can. Wisteria prefers it warmer.
Re: how to Propagate water wisteria
Appreciate the advice, everyone. Gonna try both methods and see what sticks. I'll report back in a few weeks!
