Why discus fry die so fast?

My discus fry keep dying within a week, and I can't figure out why. Tank is 40 gallons, temp at 84F, pH 6.5, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrate under 10ppm. I do 30% water changes daily, feed them baby brine shrimp 4 times a day. They start strong but then just fade. What am I missing?

Sounds like your water params are solid, but fry are super sensitive. How's the lighting? Too much stress can mess with them. Also, what's your filtration? Sponge filters are best for fry, less current.

Agree with EasyGo on the sponge filter. Another thing, are you using any meds or additives? Even small amounts of meds can wipe out fry. Also, check for any sudden temp swings, even a degree or two can be sketchy for them.

I had the same issue until I switched to blackwater setup. Tannins seem to chill them out. Also, maybe cut the feeding to 3 times a day? Overfeeding can foul the water fast, even with daily changes.

Thanks for the tips. I'm using a canister filter but have the flow turned way down. Maybe I'll try a sponge filter instead.

Mine died too until I started adding Indian almond leaves. Cheap fix, might be worth a shot. Also, how's the tank placement? If it's near a door or window, vibrations could stress 'em out.

Lighting is key. Fry need dim light for the first few weeks. Also, are you using RO water? Tap water can have trace elements that fry can't handle. And what's your water change routine? Consistency is huge.

Spot on about the substrate. Bare bottom is a game-changer. And yeah, older parents can pass on weaker genes. How many fry are we talking about? Crowding can be a silent killer.
