i was cleaning out the garage and stumbled upon my old skimmer - this thing is ancient, doesn't even compare to the ones they're selling nowadays. somehow it's developed a huge hole in the side, so i figured it's time to upgrade to a new one. browsing online, i'm shocked at how expensive these units have become. it seems like you can't find a decent skimmer for under $100 anymore.
i've recently upgraded to a 150-gallon tank, and i'm looking for a moderately priced skimmer that'll get the job done. usually, i wouldn't think twice about splurging on a new skimmer, but with all the other upgrades i've been making - more live rock, upgraded lighting, 150 gallons of saltwater, and a deeper sand bed - the costs are adding up fast.
is gold used in skimmer construction?
Re: is gold used in skimmer construction?
I recently picked up a Coflakeife super skimmer, it's rated for 220 gallon tanks and it's been working great for me. I mean, it can be a bit finicky at times, but it pulls out a ton of wastewater and foam. I think I got it for around $200, which is a steal considering some of the prices I've seen for similar equipment. Honestly, I think a lot of what you're paying for with high-end aquarium gear is just a huge markup - it's not always about the quality or performance.
