Can excess dechlorinator harm fish?

Post by lainus »

I've been using a bit more dechlorinator than recommended lately, just to be safe. But now I'm wondering if too much could actually hurt my fish. Anyone have experience with this?

From what I've read, most dechlorinators are safe even in higher doses. I use Seachem Prime and have accidentally doubled the dose before with no issues. Just make sure you're not going way overboard.

Excess dechlorinator can bind oxygen in the water, which might stress fish if you're using a lot. Stick to the recommended dose unless you're dealing with heavy chloramine. What brand are you using?

I've gone over the dose a few times with API Tap Water Conditioner, and my fish were totally chill. But yeah, maybe don't make it a habit, just in case.

Yo, if you're gonna overdo it, at least make sure your tank's got good surface agitation. Helps with oxygen exchange, ya know? My Betta's been fine even when I messed up the dose.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'll try to stick closer to the recommended amount from now on.

Glad you're being cautious. It's always better to err on the side of safety, but consistency with dosing is key for stable water conditions.

That's a solid point. I've seen my Tetras get a bit sketchy when I went overboard with Prime. Now I measure it out properly.

I've never had issues with slight overdosing, but I also run a sponge filter and an air stone to keep oxygen levels up. Maybe that's why.

My Guppies seem happy even when I add a little extra dechlorinator. But I'm still new to this, so I'm trying to be more precise now.
