why do my leaves have holes?

Post by tankkeeper »

My Anubias leaves are developing holes, and I can't figure out why. The tank's a 20-gallon with Fluval Stratum substrate, LED lighting for 8 hours a day, and CO2 injection. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Got some Neon Tetras and a few Amano Shrimp in there. Anyone seen this before?

I've had similar issues with my Java Fern. Could it be a nutrient deficiency? I'm not super experienced, but my plants improved after adding root tabs.

Holes in leaves usually point to potassium deficiency or physical damage. What's your fertilization routine like? Also, check if the Amanos are nibbling on them, though they usually leave healthy plants alone.

I dose Thrive twice a week, but maybe it's not enough. The Amanos don't seem to mess with the leaves, but I'll keep an eye out.

If you're dosing Thrive and still seeing holes, try upping the potassium. Seachem Potassium is a solid option. Also, how old are the leaves? Older leaves sometimes degrade naturally.

My Java Fern had holes when I first got it, but it bounced back after a few weeks. Maybe just give it time? I didn't change anything.

Appreciate the advice, y'all. Gonna grab some Seachem Potassium and see if that helps. The leaves are pretty new, so it's gotta be the deficiency. Thanks!
