what plants are safe for turtles?

Post by _Vodnik »

I've got a red-eared slider in a 40 gallon tank and wanna add some plants. What's gonna survive the munching? Tried Java Fern before but it got wrecked. Need something tough, maybe Anubias?

Anubias is a solid pick, they're pretty chill with turtles. Just attach it to driftwood or rocks so the roots don't get dug up. My slider messed with it at first but gave up after a week. Hornwort's another option, grows fast so it can handle some nibbling.

Duckweed might work if you're cool with it taking over. Turtles eat it but it grows so fast it doesn't matter. Just gotta scoop out the extra now and then.

Thanks for the tips. Gonna try Anubias and Hornwort first. How's the lighting for these? Running a basic LED setup, 6 hours a day.

That's plenty for Anubias, they're low light. Hornwort's flexible too, but might grow slower. If it starts looking sketchy, bump the light to 8 hours.

Yeah, Hornwort's weird like that. Sometimes it thrives in low light, other times it just melts. No rhyme or reason. Duckweed's the same, honestly.

True, plants can be finicky. If you're up for it, Water Hyacinth is another option. Just floats on top, turtles love to nibble the roots. But it needs bright light and warm water, so depends on your setup.

Yep, and it's illegal in some places cause it's invasive. Check your local laws before grabbing any.

Didn't even think about that. Gonna stick to Anubias and Hornwort for now. Appreciate the help, everyone.
