Adding fine sand over small stones
Adding fine sand over small stones
I've got a 55 gallon tank with a mix of small river stones and gravel. Thinking about adding a layer of fine sand on top for a smoother look. Anyone tried this before? Worried about compaction or anaerobic pockets forming.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
Sounds sketchy to me. Sand always sinks to the bottom, no matter what you do. Gonna end up with a mess.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
I've done this in my 40 gallon with no issues. Just make sure the sand layer isn't too thick, maybe half an inch max. Also, stir it gently during water changes to prevent dead spots.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
It depends on the sand type. Pool filter sand works great because the grains are uniform and don't compact as easily. I've used it over gravel for years with no problems.

Thanks for the input. I'll try a thin layer of pool filter sand and keep an eye on it during maintenance.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
Good call. Just remember to rinse the sand thoroughly before adding it. Cloudy water is a pain to deal with.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
Still think it's a weird vibe, but if you're gonna do it, at least use a siphon to clean the sand regularly.
Re: Adding fine sand over small stones
Exactly. My Corydoras love sifting through the sand. It's worth the extra effort for their sake.
