plants that work with rasboras
I'm setting up a 20 gallon for some harlequin rasboras and wanna add plants that vibe with them. What's worked for y'all? I got a basic LED light, sand substrate, and a sponge filter running.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Anubias and Java Fern are solid choices. They don't need much light and rasboras seem to like the broad leaves. Just attach them to driftwood or rocks.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
I'd add Cryptocoryne Wendtii to that list. It's hardy, grows well in sand, and rasboras love darting through the leaves. Just make sure your water isn't too hard, it prefers softer conditions.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
My rasboras go nuts for floating plants like Frogbit. They provide shade and the roots give the fish something to explore. Plus, they're easy to manage, just scoop out the extras when they multiply too much.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Thanks for the suggestions! Gonna grab some Anubias and Frogbit this weekend. Any tips on keeping the Frogbit from taking over the whole surface?
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Just trim the roots and remove excess plants during water changes. Rasboras appreciate some open swimming space, so keep about 50% of the surface clear.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
If you're worried about light blocking, you can corral the Frogbit with airline tubing. It keeps it contained but still lets the rasboras enjoy it.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Yeah, the tubing trick works great. My rasboras also love hanging out under the Frogbit when they're feeling shy. It's like their little hideout.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Another plant to consider is Vallisneria. It grows tall and provides great cover for rasboras. Just be ready to trim it back if it gets too wild.
Re: plants that work with rasboras
Vallisneria is a good call, but it can spread fast in sand if you're not careful. Maybe start with just a few runners.
