discus tank canister filter setup
discus tank canister filter setup
Setting up a new canister filter for my 75 gallon Discus tank. Got an FX6 but worried about flow being too strong. Anyone run this setup before? Tank has sand substrate, driftwood, and a few Amazon swords. Water stays around 84F, pH 6.8. Fish are juveniles, about 3 inches.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
FX6 is solid for that size tank. I've got one on my 90 gallon with similar setup. Just point the output towards the glass or use a spray bar to diffuse flow. My Discus don't mind it once they adjust. How often you doing water changes?
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
Yep, spray bar cuts the flow nice. I run mine with sponge pre-filter too, keeps the big stuff outta the canister. What's your nitrate level? Juves need clean water, I do 50% changes twice a week.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
Thanks, gonna try the spray bar. I'm doing 30% changes every 3 days, nitrates hover around 10ppm. They're eating beef heart mix twice daily.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
That's a good schedule. Beef heart's great for growth. Just watch the flow after feeding, don't wanna blast food everywhere. I keep my spray bar about 2 inches below water surface, gives decent surface agitation without too much current.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
Mine's same depth, works a treat. You got a backup sponge filter in there? Power outages happen, and Discus ain't cheap. I run a cheap air pump with sponge as insurance.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
Smart move. I've got a battery backup for the canister but a sponge's good redundancy. What heater you running? Gotta keep that temp steady.
Re: discus tank canister filter setup
Using two 200W Eheim Jagers, one on each side. They're dialed in tight, never seen more than 0.5F fluctuation. Sponge backup's a good call though, gonna grab one this weekend.
