Betta fish and tank covers

Post by floria »

I've been thinking about getting a tank cover for my betta. Do they really need one, or is it just for looks? My tank's a 5 gallon with a sponge filter, and I've heard mixed things about whether covers are necessary.

Covers can help prevent jumping, which bettas are known for. I've lost one before because I didn't have a cover. If your tank's open-top, I'd recommend it. Also helps with evaporation.

Yeah, bettas are jumpers for sure. Mine tried to leap out during a water change once. Scared me half to death! A cover's a good safety net, pun intended.

Totally agree with Riff9. Covers are a must if you don't wanna risk losing your fish. Plus, it keeps dust and other stuff outta the water. My betta's way happier with one.

I use a mesh cover on my 10 gallon. Lets light in but keeps the fish in. Works like a charm, and it's cheap too.

If you're worried about aesthetics, glass covers are sleek and functional. They also help maintain stable water temps by reducing evaporation. Just make sure there's some airflow so gas exchange isn't blocked.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll look into a mesh or glass cover. Didn't realize how important it could be for safety.

Glad you're considering it. Just make sure whatever you get fits snugly. Gaps can defeat the purpose.

I've seen some DIY covers with window screen mesh and binder clips. Super budget-friendly if you're into that. My betta's never tried to jump since I put one on.

Jumping aside, covers also help if you have other pets. My cat used to mess with the water until I got a cover. Now it's a non-issue.
