I was advised by my college teacher that a 50-60L aquarium would be suitable for two clown fish, but I'm not entirely sure. What are the essentials I'll need to get started - I'm thinking salt, a heater, filter, and so on.
Is a skimmer really necessary, and what's the point of moon lighting?
How much salt do I need per litre of water, and are there any other key things I should be considering?

Glad you asked, your teacher's got it wrong. 20 gallons is the smallest size recommended for a pair of clowns, but I think that's still a bit too small, personally I'd say 25 gallons.
You're on the right track with salt, heater, filter, etc. Don't forget to grab a refractometer, some powerheads, and proper lighting.
Skimmer's a good idea, but not everyone uses one. You can pick up a Boyu one for cheap.
As for salt, it depends on the brand you choose, I've found.
Take some time to read through the nano and marine journals, there's a wealth of knowledge in there. Grab a notebook and pen, ask plenty of questions, but most importantly, be patient. The salty side's worth it, trust me.
