If you're really tight on cash, skip the live plants and go for silk ones. They're cheaper than live plants and still give your fish places to hide.

I do the same, and it's been working great. Prime is a lifesaver for budget keepers.

I've heard some people use tap water without conditioner if they let it sit for 24 hours. Is that safe, or just sketchy?

I use a cheap LED light from Walmart for my tank. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done.

Anyone else just feed their betta generic fish flakes? Mine seems fine with them, but I've heard mixed things.

Flakes can work, but they're not ideal. They often lack the protein bettas need. Pellets are better, even if they're a bit pricier.
