Betta fish and water clarity
Betta fish and water clarity
My betta's tank water keeps getting cloudy after a few days, even with regular water changes. I'm using a sponge filter, and params are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate. What's the deal?
Re: Betta fish and water clarity
How often are you changing the water? And what's the tank size? Could be overfeeding or too much light.
Re: Betta fish and water clarity
Cloudy water can be bacterial blooms. If you're changing water too often, you might be disrupting the cycle. Try reducing changes to 20% weekly and see if it stabilizes.

What's your substrate? Fine sand can sometimes kick up and cause cloudiness if disturbed.

I had the same issue until I cut back on feeding. Those little guys don't need much, and leftover food can mess with the water big time.
Re: Betta fish and water clarity
Yeah, overfeeding's a common culprit. Maybe try fasting for a day or two and see if it clears up.

You using any water clarifiers? Some of 'em work wonders, but others are just snake oil. Gotta read reviews first.
Re: Betta fish and water clarity
Bacterial blooms are usually white or grayish. If it's green, you've got algae, which means too much light or nutrients. What's your lighting schedule?

Tank size matters too. Smaller tanks get dirty faster. What's the gallon count?
