how to choose the right Betta tank size

Post by flier_kit »

I'm setting up a new tank for my betta and wanna make sure I get the size right. He's a halfmoon, pretty active, and I've heard conflicting advice on minimum gallons. What's the real deal?

A 5-gallon tank is the bare minimum for a betta, but if you can go bigger, do it. They thrive in larger spaces, and a 10-gallon gives them more room to explore. Just make sure it's heated and filtered.

Yeah, 5 gallons is cool, but bigger is always better. My dude's in a 10-gallon, and he's living his best life. Plus, you can add some chill tankmates like snails or shrimp if you've got the space.

Totally agree. A bigger tank also means more stable water params, which is key for their health.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I think I'll go with a 10-gallon then. Any tips on decor? I want to make sure he's got plenty of hiding spots.

Soft plants like java fern or anubias are great. Avoid sharp edges on decor since their fins are delicate. A couple of caves or driftwood pieces can give him places to chill.

I'd also recommend a gentle filter. Bettas don't like strong currents, so a sponge filter or adjustable flow works best. Keeps the water clean without stressing them out.

What about lighting? Does it matter much for the tank size?

Yep, and for lighting, just keep it moderate. Too bright can stress them out, especially if they don't have enough cover.

I've got a 5-gallon with a betta and a snail. Works fine, but I do weekly water changes to keep things clean. Might upgrade to a 10-gallon soon though.
