feeding mushrooms without overfeeding

Post by mikoson »

I've been feeding my mushrooms Reef Roids twice a week, but I'm noticing some algae buildup. How often do you guys feed yours without causing issues? My tank's a 40 gallon with moderate lighting, running a protein skimmer, and I do 10% water changes weekly.

Twice a week might be pushing it if your nutrients are already high. I'd cut back to once a week and see if the algae chills. What's your nitrate level at? Mine stay happy with a single feeding, and I run carbon to keep things clean.

I just dump a pinch of pellets in there and hope for the best. My shrooms seem fine, but my tank's a mess otherwise. Got a 20 gallon with cheap LED lights, no skimmer, and I barely remember water changes. Maybe don't do what I do.

I've had good results with spot feeding mine every 10 days. They're in a 30 gallon with T5 lighting, and I keep nitrates below 5 ppm. If you're getting algae, maybe check your phosphate levels too. Overfeeding can spike both.

Yo, my shrooms get fed like once a month and they're chillin'. Tank's a 50 gallon with Radions, and I dose amino acids instead of gooping up the water. Less food, less hassle, ya know?

Amino acids are a solid move. I've been using them too, but I still toss in some mysis shrimp every couple weeks. My mushrooms puff up nice, and no algae drama. What brand of amino acids you using?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try scaling back to once a week and check my nitrates. Appreciate the help!

Let us know how it goes. And if the algae doesn't back off, consider adding a cleanup crew. My trochus snails do wonders.

Cleanup crew? I got one hermit crab that's probably plotting my demise. Maybe I should step up my game.

Hermits can be sketchy. I'd go for cerith snails—they're less likely to knock stuff over and they're algae machines.
