Filter maintenance tips

Post by FinFan »

I've been running a HOB filter for about six months now, and it's starting to make weird noises. Should I replace the media or just clean it? Tank's a 20-gallon with a Betta and some Neon Tetras, no live plants yet.

If it's just noise, try cleaning the impeller first. Gunk builds up there and throws off the balance. Take it apart, rinse the impeller and housing with tank water, not tap. Replacing media isn't necessary unless it's falling apart, but if you do, stagger the change so you don't crash your cycle.

Thanks, Reelstar. I'll give the impeller a clean this weekend and see if that helps. Didn't realize tap water could mess with the bacteria.

My filter's been sketchy too. Gonna try cleaning it like you said. Hope it works.

I had the same issue last month. Cleaned the impeller and it's been quiet since. Just don't use soap or anything harsh.

Yep, chlorine'll wreck your biofilter fast. Always use dechlorinated or tank water for maintenance. Also, check if the impeller shaft is worn—sometimes that's the real culprit.

How often do y'all clean your filters? Mine's a sponge type in a 10-gallon.

I squeeze my sponge filter in old tank water during water changes, about once a month. Doesn't need much more than that unless it's clogged.

Depends on bioload. For a lightly stocked tank like yours, every 4-6 weeks is fine. Heavy stocking or messy eaters might need every 2-3 weeks. Just don't overclean—you wanna preserve that beneficial bacteria.
