Setting up a new tank: Need help

Post by flintech »

I'm setting up a new 20-gallon tank and need advice on cycling. I've got a sponge filter, some driftwood, and CaribSea substrate. Should I use bottled bacteria or just let it cycle naturally? Also, any tips on keeping the water stable during the process?

Bottled bacteria can speed things up, but it's kinda hit or miss. I've had good luck with FritzZyme, but some brands are sketchy. Just make sure you're testing ammonia and nitrite daily. How often you gonna do water changes?

Natural cycling is more reliable in my experience. Bottled bacteria often fail to establish a stable colony. What's your water source? Tap water with conditioner, or are you using RO?

I recommend Seachem Stability if you're going the bottled route. It's consistently worked for me. Also, keep the temperature around 80°F to speed up bacterial growth. What's your heater setup?

Thanks for the tip. I'm planning to test daily and do 25% water changes every other day. Does that sound about right?

Yep, that's a solid plan. Just don't go overboard with the changes, or you'll mess with the bacteria growth. What kinda fish you gonna stock once it's cycled?

I've heard mixed reviews about Stability. Some say it crashes after a few weeks. Have you had long-term success with it?

Yes, I've used it in multiple tanks without issues. The key is to follow the dosing instructions precisely. Overdosing can cause problems. Are you using any plants to help with the cycle?

Plants are a game-changer. They'll suck up some of the nasties and give your tank a chill vibe. Anubias or Java Fern are easy starters. You got any in there yet?

I agree on the plants. They also help stabilize the tank long-term. Just avoid heavy root feeders if you're not using nutrient-rich substrate. What's your lighting situation?
