How to set up a temporary Betta tank
I need to set up a temporary tank for my betta while I clean the main one. What's the easiest way to do this without stressing them out too much? I've got a 2.5 gallon spare tank, but no filter or heater yet.

You can totally use the 2.5 gallon for a short time, but you'll wanna grab a small heater if you can. Bettas need warm water, around 78-80 degrees. A sponge filter would help too, but if it's just for a day or two, daily water changes should cut it.

Agreed. Also, make sure you've got some water conditioner ready. Chlorine will mess with their gills, and you don't wanna risk it.

If you're using tap water, let it sit for 24 hours to off-gas chlorine if you don't have conditioner. A small hiding spot or plant will help reduce stress. I've used a clean coffee mug as a cheap hide before, just make sure no sharp edges.

The key is stability. Even if it's temporary, sudden changes in temp or water quality can shock them. Test the water params before moving them, and match the temp as close as possible. A floating thermometer is cheap and super handy for this.

I've done this a bunch. A 2.5 is fine, but keep it bare-bottom for easy cleaning. No substrate means less mess. Just toss in a leaf hammock or something for them to rest on. And yeah, heater is a must unless your room stays super warm.

Why not just use a big ol' bucket? I've kept mine in a 5-gallon bucket with a heater during tank swaps. Works like a charm, and it's way easier to move around. Just cover the top so they don't jump out.

Buckets work, but visibility is worse. Harder to monitor their behavior if something's off. I'd stick with the tank if you've got it.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll grab a heater and keep the water changes frequent. Appreciate the help!

One more thing: don't feed them too much in the temp tank. Less waste means cleaner water. Stick to small portions until they're back in the main setup.
