Are caves and tunnels beneficial?
I've been thinking about adding some caves and tunnels to my 20-gallon tank. Do they really help with fish behavior or is it just for looks? My tetras seem stressed lately, and I'm wondering if hiding spots would chill them out.

Caves and tunnels can be a game-changer, especially for shy fish like tetras. I've got a 30-gallon with driftwood tunnels, and my cardinals love it. It's all about giving them spots to retreat when they feel sketched out. Just make sure the openings are wide enough so no one gets stuck.

I agree. My betta's behavior improved a ton after I added a few small caves. He's less aggressive now that he has his own space. Just avoid sharp edges, and you're golden.

The benefits are well-documented. Caves reduce stress by providing territorial boundaries and refuge. In my 40-gallon, the angelfish use them to establish dominance without constant chasing. Ensure the caves are proportionate to your fish size.

Yep, totally! My neon tetras went from hiding all the time to swimming around like they own the place after I added some PVC pipe tunnels. Cheap and effective.SoundWise wrote: ↑Thu Jul 03, 2025 3:41 am Caves and tunnels can be a game-changer, especially for shy fish like tetras. It's not just about stress. Caves can mimic natural environments, which is key for breeding. My cichlids only spawn when they've got proper hiding spots. If you're gonna try it, go for ceramic or slate, they're easier to clean.

I've seen mixed results. Some fish ignore caves entirely, while others won't leave them. Depends on the species, I guess. My guppies couldn't care less, but the kuhli loaches are always tucked away in theirs.

Honestly, I just think they look cool. My tank's got this weird vibe with all these little hidey-holes, and the fish seem to dig it. Plus, it's fun to watch them dart in and out.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'll start with a couple of small caves and see how my tetras react. Appreciate the advice!
