30-gallon stocking suggestions

Post by candystix »

I'm setting up a 30-gallon freshwater tank and need some stocking ideas. I've got a sandy substrate, low light plants like Anubias, and a sponge filter. What fish would work well here?

A school of 10-12 Neon Tetras would look great in that setup. They're peaceful and love soft water. Maybe add a pair of Honey Gouramis as a centerpiece fish.

Yep, Neon Tetras are a solid choice. If you wanna mix it up, throw in some Cherry Shrimp. They're chill and help keep the tank clean. Just watch out for the Gouramis snacking on 'em.

I'd recommend a small group of Corydoras, maybe 6-8. They'll sift through the sand and add some activity to the bottom. Just make sure your water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and low nitrate.

Agreed. Corydoras are a great addition. They're social and do best in groups. Just avoid sharp substrates that could damage their barbels.

What about a Betta? Would that work with the other fish?

Bettas can be hit or miss with tankmates. Some are chill, others will chase everything. If you try it, have a backup plan in case the Betta gets aggressive.

For a 30-gallon, you could also consider a dwarf cichlid like Apistogramma. They're colorful and relatively peaceful, but they might claim a territory.

Neons and Corys are overrated. Go for something wild like a group of Kilifish or a small school of Emperor Tetras. They've got way more personality.

I've got a similar setup with Harlequin Rasboras and they're thriving. Super easy to care for and they school tightly.
