How to choose a Betta tank substrate
What's the best substrate for a betta tank? I've heard mixed things about sand vs gravel, and wanna make sure my fish is comfy. Got a 5-gallon with a sponge filter, heater set to 78, and some silk plants. Just not sure about the bottom layer.

Sand's my go-to, especially if you're gonna have live plants later. It's softer on their fins, and you won't get food stuck in crevices like with gravel. Just make sure it's fine-grained, not the sharp stuff. I use pool filter sand, cheap and works great.

Agreed! Sand's also easier to clean if you siphon right. Gravel can trap debris and mess with water quality over time.

I've got gravel in mine 'cause it looks cool, but yeah, it's a pain to clean. My dude seems fine though, no torn fins or anything. Just gotta be extra careful with vacuuming.

Gravel's sketchy if you ask me. Had a betta get a fin tear from it once. Switched to sand and never looked back. Plus, it's chill for shrimp if you wanna add 'em later.

For a planted tank, sand or aqua soil is ideal. Gravel can work, but it's less stable for root systems. If you're sticking with silk plants, sand is still the safer bet for your fish's fins.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try sand then, maybe add some live plants down the line. Appreciate the help!

Just make sure you rinse the sand well before adding it. Cloudy water's a pain to clear up after.

I've used both and prefer sand. Gravel's okay if you're diligent with maintenance, but sand's just easier overall. Less hassle, healthier tank.

My betta loves digging in sand, it's kinda cute. Gravel never gave him that option. Just sayin'.
