information on lawnmower blenny

Post by Aurorax »

My mother in law was kind enough to offer to buy me a fish the other day, but the LFS was packed with tangs and coflake eaters - not exactly what I was after. I ended up going for a jewelled blenny on a whim, only to find out they're herbivores. Does anyone know what they like to munch on? I've chucked some nori in the tank, but he's not bothered. Guess I'll have to order something in - any suggestions would be great, thanks.

I've had a similar issue with my blenny; it relied heavily on hair algae, which eventually depleted, and sadly, it didn't make it. I'm not sure if it'll work for your jewelled blenny, but you might want to give frozen algae a shot - my tangs absolutely love it.

Also, I've learned a valuable lesson the hard way: never buy a fish without doing your research first.

As weird as it sounds you can try lettuce too, it's a bit unconventional but some fish seem to take to it.

I was really hoping for a straightforward 'they love money algae' answer, but I guess that was wishful thinking. I'll give frozen algae and lollo rosso a try, see if that does the trick. If not, I think it'd be best for him to go back to the LFS - he'd likely be much happier in another tank. Appreciate the advice, thanks.

I've had my jewelled blenny for a bit now, and I've found they do alright on a mix of things - mine also take brine shrimp every now and then, as well as a Vitali flake food.

Give the veggie clip a go - chuck in some nori, lettuce or broccoli, see what he fancies. I've seen them munch on lettuce before, but I reckon nori would be a hit with him.

Nori, lettuce, and spinach all tried and failed, but interestingly he's pecking away at the algal build up on the glass. Doesn't seem sick, actually looks quite content, maybe he's just being a bit fussy. Will keep an eye on him, but think I'll give that flake food a go, can't do any harm.

You could try dried seaweed from your LFS, see if that's more to his liking.

Nori is essentially dried seaweed, so I'm not surprised he wasn't too fussed about it. Flake food might be worth a shot, but I'd also recommend trying some sinking pellets - they could be just what he's looking for. You could try dropping a few near him and see if he shows any interest after a bit. I've got some veggie-friendly pellets for my tangs and foxfaces, so maybe look for something similar - they might just do the trick.
