Finding compatible native tank mates for kubotai rasboras

Post by eleNt »

The Aqua One Horizon 130 has ample space for at least a dozen kubotai rasboras. As I've previously outlined, this tank will be a biotope recreation of the Songgaria River in Western Thailand, mirroring the natural habitat of these fish. I'm considering native Rasbora family species as potential tankmates. Are there any species from the Songgaria River, either native or introduced, that I might find in local fish stores in my area?

I'm surprised you didn't take a closer look at the Seriously Fish profile and Biotope websites I shared earlier. The Aqua One Horizon 130 can easily accommodate a much larger school of Kubotai rasboras - I'd recommend starting with at least 20.

I did check those resources, but I'm still wondering if my local fish store carries those tankmates you mentioned. As for the Aqua One Horizon 130, what's the maximum number of fish you'd recommend, considering I'm planning a biotope setup?

You'd need to check your LFS yourself, I've no way of knowing their current stock. Which species from the profiles caught your eye? For a 130-litre tank, I'd be comfortable with up to 40 Kubotai Rasboras if it was a single-species setup – with multiple species, the total number would be lower.

I'm thinking of stocking around 25 Kubotai Rasboras in the tank and then adding 15 or less other tankmates, depending on their size. If Akysis vespa are native to the area, I'll get a group of them - they're around 4cm long, so should be fine for the 130. Actually, I might change my biotope to the Hanthayaw/Suriya River instead, since Akysis vespa and Kubotai Rasboras might coexist in the same area.

I think Ambastaia sidthimunki would be a great addition to your tank, they're dwarf chain loaches and they're from Thailand. While I'm not sure if they're found in the same river system as the Kubotai rasboras, they'd definitely work well together. They do prefer to be in a big group, ideally 10 or more.

I've been looking into Ambastaia sidthimunki, and it seems they're found in the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos. According to Kottelat's research, the type locality is in northern Thailand - specifically in the brooks of the Lom Sak district in Phetchaburi Province. This information is from Kottelat's 2012 study, "Conspectus cobitidum: an inventory of the loaches of the world."
