How to prevent fin rot in Bettas

Post by brayk »

I've been noticing some fraying on my betta's fins lately. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Tank is 5 gallons, heated to 78F, filtered with a sponge filter. Any tips to stop it from getting worse?

Fin rot's a pain, but you're on the right track with clean water. How often are you doing water changes? I'd bump it up to 20% twice a week if you're not already. Also, check for any sharp decor, that stuff can mess with their fins.

Oh no, poor little guy! I've had this happen before. Adding a bit of aquarium salt helped mine heal up. Just make sure you don't overdo it, maybe half a teaspoon per gallon. And keep the water super clean, like Aurorix8 said.

Yep, sharp decor's a big one. I'd also add some Indian almond leaves if you can find 'em. They've got antibacterial properties and help with stress.

If the fin rot's bacterial, you might need meds. I've used API Fin & Body Cure with good results. But only if it's getting worse despite clean water and salt. Keep an eye on it.

What's your filter maintenance like? A dirty sponge can harbor bacteria. Rinse it in tank water during changes to keep it clean without killing the good stuff.

I've heard stress can make it worse too. Maybe dim the lights a bit? My guy seemed happier when I did that.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I'll try the salt and almond leaves first. Gonna check the decor too, just in case.

Good call. Let us know how it goes. Oh, and if you're using tap water, double-check your conditioner's working right. Some brands don't cut it.

Hope your fish feels better soon! It's so stressful when they're not doing well. You're doing great by asking for help early.
