Stocking assistance

Post by dawnas »

I'm setting up a 30 gallon tank and wanna stock it with some chill fish. Thinking about a school of Neon Tetras and a pair of Dwarf Gouramis. Anyone got experience with this combo? Water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.

Neon Tetras and Dwarf Gouramis can work, but keep an eye on the Gouramis. They can sometimes get territorial, especially in smaller tanks. What's your filtration like? A good filter is key with Gouramis.

Yep, Gouramis can be sketchy with smaller fish. I'd say go for a bigger school of Tetras, like 10-12, to spread out any aggression. Also, what's your tank temp? Gouramis like it warmer, around 78-80°F.

I've got a similar setup but with Harlequin Rasboras instead of Tetras. They're way more chill with Gouramis. Maybe consider swapping?

Rasboras are a solid choice, but Tetras are flashier. Just gotta watch the Gouramis don't mess with 'em too much.

Honestly, I'd skip the Gouramis and go for a big school of Tetras and some Corydoras. Less drama, more fun. Plus, Corys are hilarious to watch.

I think your original plan is fine if you're careful. Dwarf Gouramis can be sweethearts if they're well-fed and have enough space. Just make sure you've got plenty of plants for the Tetras to hide in.

What's your substrate like? Tetras love a dark substrate, makes their colors pop. Also, consider adding some floating plants to diffuse the light and give the Gouramis some cover.

Totally agree. A well-planted tank can mitigate a lot of aggression. Java Moss and Anubias are great for this.

If you're set on Gouramis, maybe start with the Tetras first and add the Gouramis later. Gives the Tetras time to settle and establish their territory.
