Planning an upgrade from 2 10-gallons to a 50-gallon tank, and I'm super stoked. Got my heart set on a couple fish already - the Dot Dash Butterflyfish and the Coflake beauty angelfish.

Thinking about adding some other species, but those two are a must. Was also considering a snowflake eel, do you think that's feasible?

By the way, I'll be trading in most of my current fish for supplies, except for my trusty ocellaris clownfish - that one's a keeper.

A Snowflake Eel wouldn't be the best fit with those fish you mentioned. They're ambush predators that hide in the rockwork, and they'll go after anything small enough to fit in their mouths - we're talking 3-4 inches or less. Unless you've got some fast-swimming fish that can outrun them, you're looking at a lot of potential problems.

These eels are messy eaters, too. They like to stash their food in the rocks where you can't get to it, and they're more interested in snacking on your CUC or small fish than they are in eating what you're trying to feed them. And let me tell you, mine was not exactly friendly - it'd ambush my hand whenever it felt threatened.

So I was thinking of putting a bristletooth tang in the 50 gallon, and just keeping it until it hits 4 inches or so, then rehoming it - would that work out, or is it gonna be too much of a pain?

Honestly, buying livestock with the intention of rehoming it later is a recipe for disaster. It's not about whether your tank can handle it as a juvenile, it's about whether it can thrive as an adult. If a fish isn't suited to your tank in the long term, it's not worth bringing home. You're setting yourself up for a world of problems - irregular behavior, aggression, illness, and growth defects.

Take it from me, there's no guarantee you'll be able to rehome when the time comes, and you might be creating compatibility issues that you can't even see coming. Tangs, for example, need space to swim - lots of it. We're talking minimum 70 gallons for a bristletooth. If you can't offer that, you're better off not bringing one home at all.

I'm not super experienced with saltwater, but I'll throw out some ideas.

You could consider a Royal Gramma Basslet, they're pretty cool.
Also, the Yellow Stripe Clingfish is an option - I've heard good things about them.
If you're looking for something a bit more colorful, the Indigo, Purple, Springer, or Sunrise Dottyback might work.
A Yellowhead Jawfish could be a nice addition too.
As for a school, Black Reef or Blue/Green Chromis could be a good choice.
I've also come across the Scissortail Dartfish and Bluethroat Pikeblenny - they seem like interesting fish.

I'm not super familiar with saltwater, but I was in MA and I saw a picasso trigger - he was gorgeous, but huge, so I don't think it'd work for your tank.
