Yep, gravel vac's a must. My tank was a mess till I started using one.

And don't forget to rinse your filter media in tank water, not tap. Chlorine'll kill your good bacteria.

This. So many people wreck their cycle by rinsing in tap. Learned that the hard way my first year in the hobby.
