How to acclimate torch corals

Post by Pierce »

Just picked up a new Torch Coral and wanna make sure I don't mess it up. What's the best way to acclimate them? My tank's at 78F, salinity 1.025, with a Red Sea LED running 8 hours. Got a pair of Clowns and some Zoas in there too.

Drip acclimation's the way to go. I use a 1-hour drip with airline tubing, matching temp and salinity. Keep an eye on them during the process, they can be sensitive. What's your alk level? Torches like it stable, around 8-9 dKH.

I've had success with floating the bag for 20 mins to temp acclimate, then adding small amounts of tank water every 10 mins for an hour. Less equipment needed, but gotta be patient. How's your flow? They prefer moderate, indirect current.

Yo, don't rush it. I killed my first Torch by being impatient. Now I drip for 90 mins, no joke. Also, dim your lights for a couple days after. They'll thank you for it. What salt mix you using?

I agree with the drip method. It's worked well for my Torches. Make sure your magnesium is above 1250 too, helps with stress. Are you using any coral dip before adding them?

Drip's cool and all, but I just float and swap water every 15 mins for an hour. Never lost one yet. Tank's got a Nero 5 on low, keeps things chill. You got a sandbed or bare bottom?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the drip method with my next one. My alk's at 8.5, mag at 1300, so should be good. Using Tropic Marin salt, no dip yet but open to suggestions.

Haha, my first Torch looked so sketchy after a quick acclimation. Learned my lesson. Now I drip like Cubies said, and they're thriving. Also, feed 'em some mysis once a week, they go nuts for it.

Tropic Marin's solid. For dip, I use Bayer at 5ml per gallon for 10 mins. Kills pests without stressing the coral too much.

I'm new to Torches. Why's alk so important? My tank's at 7 dKH, should I raise it?
