Betta fish and health check routines

Post by klarik »

What's your go-to routine for checking if your betta is healthy? I've got a 5-gallon tank with a sponge filter, and I do weekly water changes, but I'm not sure if I'm missing something. My fish seems active but sometimes flares at his reflection.

I usually start with the basics, like checking water params. If ammonia and nitrite are zero and nitrate's under 20, that's a good sign. Also, watch for clamped fins or weird swimming patterns. Your guy flaring could just be him being territorial, but keep an eye on it.

Yeah, water params are key. I test mine every few days 'cause I'm paranoid, lol. Also, look at his appetite. If he's eating like normal, that's a solid sign. My betta's in a 10-gallon with a heater set to 78°, and he's chill as long as the temp's steady.

Totally agree. I'd add that a lazy betta might just be bored. Try adding some plants or a mirror for short bursts to keep 'em entertained.

My fish has been hiding a lot lately. Tank's at 76°, and I feed him pellets twice a day. Should I be worried?

Hiding can be stress-related. Bump the temp to 78°–80° and see if that helps. Also, check for sharp decor or aggressive tankmates. Sometimes it's the little things.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll test my water more often and maybe add some floating plants to cut down on reflections.

Good call on the plants. Mine loves hanging out under the frogbit roots. Just don't go overboard with the mirror thing, or you'll stress him out more.

Yeah, mirrors are a double-edged sword. I use 'em for like 5 minutes max, twice a week. Keeps my guy active without overdoing it.
