plants that don't need much light

Post by duskyfish »

I'm setting up a low-tech tank and need some plant recommendations that thrive in low light. My tank's got a basic LED, no CO2, and I'd prefer something easy to care for. Any suggestions?

Anubias and Java Fern are your best bets. They're hardy, don't need much light, and can even grow attached to driftwood or rocks. Just avoid burying the rhizome or they'll rot. My Anubias has been thriving in a dimly lit 20-gallon for years.

Yep, seconding Anubias. Also, check out Cryptocoryne Wendtii. It's a chill plant that does well in low light, though it might melt at first if you move it. Just give it time, it'll bounce back. My crypts took a month to adjust but now they're lush.

If you want something carpet-like, try Marsilea Hirsuta. It grows slower in low light but won't die off. I've got it in a 10-gallon with sand substrate and basic lighting. Just trim it occasionally to keep it tidy.

I've had the same experience with Java Fern. It's practically indestructible. Just make sure your water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and you're golden.

Don't forget about Bucephalandra. It's a bit pricier but worth it. Grows slow, needs minimal light, and comes in cool colors. I've got a few varieties glued to lava rock in my low-tech setup.

Do these plants need fertilizer? My tank's low tech too but I've never used any.

They'll survive without it, but a liquid fertilizer like Thrive or Easy Green once a week helps. Just don't overdo it or you'll get algae. I dose half the recommended amount in my 20-gallon.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. Gonna start with Anubias and Java Fern since they seem foolproof. Appreciate the help!

I've had luck with Hornwort in low light. It's a floater but you can plant it too. Grows like crazy and helps with water quality. Just be ready to trim it often.
