care and maintenance of lake victoria cichlids

Post by plocka »

Hi,

I'm looking for some info on the care requirements for a couple of fish I'm interested in.

Specifically, I'd love to know more about the Pundamilia Nyererei Makobe and the Pundamilia Senga Point.

Any details you can share would be really helpful.

Their care is quite straightforward, actually - similar to Mbuna but with an omnivorous diet, and less aggressive tendencies, though still cichlids, so that's worth keeping in mind. Being from an African rift lake, they'd thrive in higher pH conditions. Rock work is a must, and a good ratio to aim for is one male to every three females. The males are truly stunning, while the females are relatively dull in comparison. There's a noticeable gap in online resources for Victoriano Cichlid care, but I can share some useful sites if you're interested. What's your setup plan looking like?

Thanks for getting back to me, I'd really appreciate those website links - I've been having a tough time finding reliable info on these two species.

As for the setup, I'm still undecided. My tank's a 3x1x1.5ft, 120L, with decent filtration - 1000L/h. I'm thinking of keeping the decor simple, just sand and rock. My tap water's quite hard, 250PPM with a pH of 8.5. I'm also planning to run an algae scrubber.

I've been considering breeding Firemouth Cichlids, but I'm not sure if this tank's big enough - what's your take on it?

I've taken a closer look at some of the tangs available and their requirements, and I must say they really appeal to me - plus they're well-suited to my standard water stats.

I'd love to browse through some images of different Tanganyikan cichlids - do you know anywhere I can do this?

It's weird, but my local breeders and online suppliers don't seem to stock many - any idea why that is?

I found this one site, davesfish.com - they're US-based but they clearly label all their Tangs and Malawi cichlids. He's got a pretty good selection, I actually used it to find the Tangs I wanted for my own setup.
