Introducing red fish with feeder guppies and a scud colony

Post by bettaMagenta »

I'm gonna take a wild guess here, but I think it's starting to resemble a platy. I mean, I'm really not sure what else it could be, but that's just my two cents. Would love to hear some other opinions, anyone got any ideas?

Looks pretty similar to my own platty fry, so I'm with you on that.

It stood out like a sore thumb, tiny as it was, under a cm, but that vibrant orange color made it super visible, especially when surrounded by dull grey scuds and feeder guppies.

Definitely would stand out with that color, I have a painted platy and they seem pretty similar to me

I'm leaning towards platy or swordtail, it's a tad long for a platy, so possibly a swordtail, or maybe even a mix of the two.

I'm thinking it could be a classic "brick swordtail". I agree with coltin, the length does seem a bit off for a platy. The lines are fine, considering a lot of pet store fish are old hybrid forms that have been around for decades.

Reminds me of our two-month-old Sword, pretty similar if you ask me. I'm no expert, still learning, but I'm trying to stay on top of things, one step at a time.

I was fairly confident it was a livebearer, but the scud farm is pretty unpredictable - it's almost like a miniature aquatic ecosystem, so it's entirely possible that an egg somehow hitched a ride on a plant and ended up in the bin.
