Best Plants for a Low KH Tank

Post by sonyx »

I've got a 20 gallon low KH tank, around 3 dKH, and I'm struggling to find plants that thrive. My Anubias are barely growing, and the Java Fern is just surviving, not thriving. Any suggestions for plants that'll do well in these conditions?

Yo, sonyx, I feel you. Low KH tanks can be a pain. Try some Cryptocoryne Wendtii, they're chill with soft water. Mine's been growing like crazy in my 15 gallon, same KH as yours. Just gotta keep the lighting low and avoid too much CO2.

I've had good luck with Amazon Swords in my low KH tank. They're not picky about hardness as long as you give 'em enough root tabs. Also, floating plants like Frogbit help shade the tank, which keeps things stable.

Cryptocoryne species are indeed a solid choice for low KH tanks. They adapt well to soft water and don't require high light. Another option is Bucephalandra, which thrives in similar conditions. Ensure your substrate is nutrient-rich for optimal growth.

My tank's KH is around 2, and I've found that Mosses like Java Moss and Christmas Moss do really well. They don't need much light or CO2, and they're great for providing cover for shrimp and small fish.

I second this. Bucephalandra is a fantastic choice. It's slow-growing but very hardy once established. Pair it with a good liquid fertilizer for best results.

Hey, don't forget about Hornwort! It's a floating plant that's super easy to grow in low KH water. Plus, it helps with water quality by absorbing nitrates. Just be ready to trim it often, 'cause it grows like crazy.

I've had success with Vallisneria in my low KH tank. It's a background plant that grows tall and spreads runners. Just make sure you've got enough space, 'cause it can take over if you're not careful.

Java Moss is a great suggestion. It's practically indestructible and works well in low-tech setups. Just tie it to driftwood or rocks for a natural look.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I'm gonna try Cryptocoryne and Bucephalandra first. Appreciate the help.
