Corydoras substrate preferences

Post by Florence »

What's the best substrate for Corydoras? I've heard mixed opinions on sand versus gravel, and I wanna make sure my lil guys are comfy. Currently using fine gravel, but they seem to struggle a bit when sifting.

Sand is the way to go, no doubt. Corys love to dig, and gravel can rough up their barbels. I've got a 20-gallon with pool filter sand, and my Corydoras are always busy sifting through it. Plus, it's easier to clean than gravel.

Yep, sand is definitely gentler on their barbels. I switched from gravel to sand a year ago, and my Corydoras are way more active now. Just make sure it's not too coarse.

I've had success with a mix of sand and smooth pebbles. The sand lets them sift, and the pebbles give some texture. My tank's a 30-gallon with a canister filter, and the Corydoras seem to enjoy the variety.

Does anyone have experience with planted tanks and Corydoras? I'm worried sand might compact too much for the roots.

Sand works fine with plants if you stir it occasionally. I've got a heavily planted 40-gallon with sand, and my Corydoras and plants are thriving. Just use root tabs for heavy feeders.

I've seen Corydoras do well on fine gravel too, but it's gotta be smooth. The key is avoiding sharp edges. If you're sticking with gravel, maybe mix in some sand patches for them to forage in.

Pool filter sand is cheap and effective. It's what I use in all my Cory tanks. Just rinse it well before adding it to the tank to avoid cloudiness.

I dunno, man. My Corys seem chill with whatever. I've got 'em on this weird mix of sand and tiny river rocks, and they're always digging around. Maybe they're just not picky.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Gonna switch to sand and see how they like it. Appreciate the help!
