When it comes to determining the sex of these fish, vents are generally your best bet, if visible. For same-strain fish, finnage can be somewhat telling, but with different strains, fin shapes can vary so much it's tough to use as a comparison. The pointed end on the bottom pic is a pretty good indicator for male, at least with these two.

After years of observing Discus, I've developed a sense of what to look for. Still, I've been wrong often enough that I've learned to hedge my bets - probable male, probable female. My experience has helped, but I'm not immune to mistakes.
