information on the quiet jewel cichlid
Re: information on the quiet jewel cichlid
I'm still in shock at how aggressive she turned out to be. I'm thinking the Mbuna tankmates will help keep her in check, but I'm keeping a close eye on the situation. Now I'm just waiting for my pseudo saulosi to arrive, hopefully they'll integrate smoothly into the existing group.

Still eyeing that auction, if the bidding doesn't get out of hand, I'll jump in with about 15-20 minutes to go. Assuming I don't decide to make my cat a meal out of the Jewel first, I'll set up the 65g as a grow-out tank until they're closer to her size.
I'm pretty confident she'll calm down eventually. The Socolofi's already asserted her dominance - and I'm pretty sure all my Mbuna are female, by the way - so far, the Jewel's the only one getting roughed up. I've started treating the tank with Melafix to help with healing, and I'm keeping a close eye on the water quality.

I swear by Melafix when injuries pop up. The Vieja's situation is heartbreaking, though - everything was going great, then she just lost it. I guess that's the African cichlid way, but it's tough to see. I'm still holding out hope that the Vieja can be saved, despite the odds.
As for the Jewel, I have to admit, her strong will is part of why I adore her. She's as stubborn as I am, and I feel a weird connection to that. Even with all the chaos she's caused, I just can't bring myself to rehome her. I knew cichlids could be a handful, but I'm determined to make it work.
The Mbuna tank seems to be the perfect place for her - she's the smallest, and my other girls won't hesitate to put her in her place. And yeah, the Jewel would definitely give my cat a run for its money.

Lost the little Vieja this afternoon. My heart is heavy for the little guy. I did everything I could to save him, but it just wasn't meant to be.
