Discus laying eggs

Post by Limey »

I've got two mature females that have been laying eggs sporadically over the last six months. They've been with different males, but mostly one guy has been doing the fertilizing. At first, the male would eat the eggs right away, but now they've been lasting 3-4 days without him touching them. I've read it takes time for them to figure things out, but is this normal? I'm also wondering if my pleco might be sneaking in at night and eating them. I'm not trying to breed them, just curious about what's going on.

Sounds pretty normal to me, especially in a community tank. I've had experience with discus and their egg-laying habits, and it's not uncommon for them to figure things out over time. I've heard of plecos eating discus eggs, but personally, I've never seen it happen with mine. It's more likely that one of the discus is eating the eggs - they can be a bit finicky about their own eggs, especially if they're not used to the idea of laying them.

Happens to the best of them. Some just don't get the hang of it, and that's completely normal.

Thanks for the reassurance guys, I was starting to wonder if it was something I was doing wrong, but it sounds like it's just part of the learning process for them.

Other fish like my tetras eat eggs too, not just plecos. You're doing something right if they're spawning in your tank.
