Growing riccia with success

Post by Giggletons »

I'm trying to figure out the ideal spots in my tank for riccia growth. What are the best locations for it? Also, what kind of fertiliser and lighting does it require?

I'm no expert, but from what I've seen, riccia seems to thrive when it's floating near the light source. One issue I've encountered is that hair algae tends to latch onto it pretty aggressively.

They grow like crazy when floating.

In my experience, riccia seems to thrive in areas with minimal water disturbance. A setup like a plastic storage container with gentle flow, adequate lighting, and fertilization appears to be ideal. I've found that in an aquarium, the strong currents tend to tear it apart, resulting in it spreading all over the tank.

My riccia's thriving in floating corrals at the top of my aquaria, despite my best efforts to meddle with it. I've fashioned these corrals from loops of plastic hose, securing them to the tank's side. The fish seem to enjoy snacking on it, while others forage for treats amidst the growth. Regular cleaning is a must to prevent debris clumps and that unsightly mess, not to mention the BGAlgae that often takes hold - though I've found it's relatively easy to pick out by hand.
