can betta fish change color?

I'm wondering if my betta's coloring might change as he gets healthier. He was kept in pretty rough conditions at the pet store where I got him. Do you guys think that's possible - that his colors could change as he adjusts to better care? Also, any idea how old he might be?

He looks pretty young, so be prepared for some changes. I think he already seems relatively healthy, even in the bag - a lot better than those stores that keep them in tiny cups.
Also, if you think the store has horrible conditions, I wouldn't recommend supporting them by buying fish from there - it might be worth considering alternative pet stores in the future.
