Favia and scab coral care

Post by EchoFlare »

Hi Everyone,

I've been browsing through this forum for years, picking up great tips from all of you. I've finally decided to create an account to ask for some specific advice.

I've had this Favia piece for about a month now, and I thought it was doing fine. That was until about 3-4 days ago when I noticed something strange on one of its eyes. I initially thought it was a hermit shell that had somehow ended up on top of the eye, so I tried to gently remove it. But it wasn't a shell - it was more like a crusty patch that just fell apart when I touched it. The area around the eye is now starting to lose its color. Today, I found a similar crusty patch on another eye, this time at the bottom. I've asked my local fish store for help, but they've never seen anything like this before. Hopefully, someone here can provide some insight.

I'm pretty sure you've got an unwanted guest in there that's snacking on your Favia when no one's watching. I'm dealing with a similar issue myself, where something's been attacking my acan colony from underneath, leaving those same little white crusty piles.

Just checked on it this morning and that crust had definitely grown. I took the favia out and inspected underneath - sure enough, it was attached all the way from the eye down to the base. I'm still not entirely sure what it was, but I managed to remove it all, so fingers crossed that's the end of it. Guess I learned another lesson the hard way. Would've taken some pics to share if I hadn't been running late for work.
