Discus dies after being netted to a bigger tank.
Discus dies after being netted to a bigger tank.
I had a bit of a disaster on Wednesday - one of my discus breeding pairs was leaking, so I had to act fast to save them. Moved them to a bigger tank with similar parameters and temperature, and the female is doing okay, just a bit stressed. But the male didn't make it, he was too stressed and died the next day. I'm wondering if discus can have heart attacks, Marksfish? The only thing I can think of is that he's been eating a lot of beefheart lately, maybe that was a factor.

He probably had a pre-existing condition, like a Widowmaker.

That's a real head-scratcher. Fish can be unpredictable like that. I've had it happen to me too, it's just one of those things. Losing a breeding pair is tough, I feel for you. Sorry for your loss.

It's possible the move was just a coincidence, the actual cause might have been something entirely different. The fish could have been dealing with an underlying issue that only became apparent after the transfer. Sorry for your loss.

A friend suggested it could've been something on the Sprig, maybe gill flukes, but I'm not convinced since there were no symptoms beforehand.

I'm inclined to agree that it might have been an internal issue, possibly something like a heart attack. It's not uncommon for fish to just die without warning, I've experienced it before myself. No obvious symptoms beforehand, just a sudden loss. It's possible that the stress of the move triggered an underlying condition, but we may never know for sure.

I had a similar experience with my rummynose last week. One of them didn't make it when I transferred them to the discus tank. The others were fine, but I'm sure they were stressed during the netting process. I floated them in a bag before releasing them into a fry net for safety, but one still didn't survive. It's just one of those things, I guess. Sorry to hear about your discus - I can imagine how disappointing it must be. I'm inclined to agree with others that it might have been something internal, like a heart attack.

I've seen it before - fish getting super stressed in a new environment and smashing into the glass or decorations. Discus, in particular, seem pretty prone to freaking out.
