Having trouble with identification

Post by landonx »

I've been adding new fish to my aquarium over the past couple weeks and I'm totally confused about what I've got. I bought from two different stores and now I'm not sure what's what. My first batch included a Lithobates and a sulpher head - at least, that's what the store called it. I got home, did some research, and found out there's a sulpher head hap and peacock, but I had no idea which one I had.

Then, a couple weeks later, I went to the other store and they had a tank labeled Lithobates (sulpherhead). I thought those were two different fish, but I guess not. I ended up buying a Mylandi, which I later found out is also called a sulpherhead. So now I'm trying to figure out what's what.

The Lithobates I bought had color and matches pictures of other Lithobates, but then why did the second store call it a sulpherhead? The Mylandi I bought matches pictures of a sulpherhead peacock, so I'm pretty sure that's right. But the real mystery is the sulpherhead I bought at the first store - is it a hap or peacock? I've been looking at pictures and I found one that looks identical, but it's labeled juvenile Malawi rock. All three fish are small, but this one's the smallest at about 2-2.5 inches. He doesn't have much color, but his dorsal fin tip is turning yellow, along with parts of his anal fin.

Here's the mystery fish - it's hard to see any color, but there's definitely something there. Wow, first problem with him is he swims upside down, just like my blue tursio. Sorry, I'll try a different pic.

To me, it appears to be a variation of the Red Empress.
