Penang eruption vs spotted face super eruption
Penang eruption vs spotted face super eruption
Does anyone have pics of both fish for comparison? I've noticed the Spotted Face Super Eruption from Forrest tends to have more blue tones, whereas the Penang Eruption is more red. Plus, the facial spots differ between the two. Trying to decide between them due to the significant price difference.

Many breeders aim to create unique leopard snakeskins patterns. They focus on specific designs, like web patterns on gill covers, spots on gill covers, varying spot sizes, and patterns on dorsal and anal fins, even extending into the tail fins. The Penang Eruption is a notable variety developed by Mr Lee Koon Yen of Malaysia. In contrast, the Spotted Eruption and Sunrise Eruption were created by Wayne Ng of Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the Super Eruption was developed by Lim Pei Hao of Malaysia. Well-established breeders often give their creations distinct names. For instance, Robert Lim recently introduced the Panthera Eruption.

I'd recommend going with the larger one, as the smaller Discus often seem overwhelmed by their own color. I've had experience with Wayne's Eruption, and in my case, the color didn't fully develop until they were nearly adults.

Honestly, they're all just leopards. At the end of the day, it's about what you think looks nicest.

Thanks for the insight, I've noticed the resemblance to leopard hybrids too. Honestly, it's hard to keep track of all these names and subtle variations - they all start to blend together after a while.

Leopards are actually characterized by those larger striations on the face and 9 bars. On the other hand, leopard snakeskins have finer spots on the body and finer striations on the face, with those distinctive 10-14 bars of snakeskins.

I'm not a fan of these over-the-top spotted fish, but this conversation's been interesting. Cliff's advice is spot on - go for the larger one. Those smaller ones with great color? They're likely hormoned, no matter what anyone says. It's just how it is.
Personally, I've always been drawn to a strong blue base with evenly spread spots across the body. Clear fins and those distinctive SS-type striations on the face are a must for me. I've been working on my own strain for years, and I've got a name for them - they're exactly what they look like: Blue Based Spotted SS's.

I'm on the same wavelength as Liz. Hormones like Methyl testosterone can bring out color in a Discus within a week, but that comes at a cost - damage to internal organs. The Eruption and LSS take their time to color up, but with hormones, breeders can select patterns early on.
Some of these spotted Discus will see their spots merge into lines as they age, effectively losing the spots.

A large dose can really boost growth and even change females to males. But the sad truth is, those show fish don't have a long lifespan. It's a shame what some people do to win a show, but it's a harsh reality in the show world, not just with fish. I've seen it firsthand, so I know the damage it can cause.

I'm having my doubts about the distinction between Penang Eruption and Spotted Face Super Eruption. It's possible they're just hand-picking fish with facial patterns from each batch and charging more. I know breeders who give different names to fish from the same spawn. From a genetic standpoint, the spawn from either type should produce similar frequencies of each phenotype.
