I've been known to mix it up quite a bit in my tank. I've had periods where I've gone all out with plants, and other times I've kept it bare. Lately, I've been really into the look of white sand paired with driftwood.

I've scaled back on my water changes, I used to do them every 2-3 days, 20-30% at a time. Nowadays, I'm down to just one large change per week. My discus are still growing, but I don't have any juveniles and they're not fully grown out yet.

I've attached a pic of the current setup - I enjoy mixing things up, which I do weekly, mainly to maintain a clean tank. My baby bristlenose pleco recently passed away, quite strange, really.

I have a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft tank, with a sump - we're talking around 150 gallons of water. I've cut down on my discus, now at 6, and plan to drop one more before adding 5 more in the 3.5-5" range. I'm curious, would 10 discus work in a 120-gallon tank? I want to see normal discus behavior, with some plants and driftwood for them to enjoy, like in the pics above. I know the 10 gal/fish rule, and in theory, I could add more, but when they're fully grown, it's better for them to have some space. I also don't want to be a slave to daily water changes - I'm already doing them every 2-3 days, and a big one weekly. D'bunk's got me thinking about stocking levels, and I'm reevaluating my approach.

My setup's a bit different, same volume but 5 feet long and 18 inches. Thirteen discus call it home.
