keeping a black blotched zebra cichlid

Post by slicefang »

Hey i'm new here and i'm wondering if anyone can help me out. I've got a 55 gallon tank with a pelco, peacock eel, ornate bichir, and some african cichlids - i think i've got two zebra cichlids, they're orange with black blotches. I'm pretty sure one of them is a male, it's got four spots on the anal fin and it's always chasing the other cichlids, especially the other zebra that i think might be a female, no spots on the anal fin. This male zebra does this weird shaking thing, its body just starts shaking and then it darts around chasing the other fish. It looks healthy and it's not doing it all the time, but i'm not sure what's going on - is it stress or something else? The other fish are all pretty chill for the most part. Has anyone else seen this behavior in their cichlids?

lip lockin, fanning, and tail chasin is usually when a fish is tryin to show dominance over others.

shakin, flashin, and circlin without bitin, thats usually a sign of breeding behavior in cichlids.

I sexed both of them earlier, twice actually, and I'm pretty sure one's a female and the other's a male. If they do breed, I don't think the fry would make it with the other cichlids, eel, and bichir in the tank. Should I set up a 29 tall as a breeder for them? Any suggestions?
