ideal tank size for tilapia

Post by lumen9 »

I'm thinking of taking a tilapia from my brother's tank since one of his is getting bullied by the other. He's got two in there, but I'm not sure what type of tilapia it is. I was wondering if a 200 liter tank would be big enough for just one.

Also, I know this is probably a long shot, but are there any other fish I could keep with the tilapia? I was thinking maybe swordtails or mollies - I know it's probably not the best idea, but thought I'd ask anyway.

Unfortunately, a 200-litre tank isn't suitable for a tilapia. They can get quite large, so you'd need a bigger space for it to thrive. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thanks for the honest reply, I was having second thoughts anyway. Guess it's a good thing I asked for advice here first.

Tilapia are definitely pond fish, not suited for tanks like yours.

What's the actual size they can grow to?

It really depends on the type of tilapia. For instance, the yellow form of tilapiae mariae tends to stay relatively small in aquariums, usually under 8 inches. However, most tilapia species can grow quite large, typically ranging from a foot to 2 feet long.
