Java fern propagation tips
Java fern propagation tips
I've got a bunch of Java fern growing in my 20 gallon tank, but I'm not sure how to propagate it properly. Should I just cut the rhizome or wait for plantlets to form? My tank has moderate lighting, and I do weekly water changes with Seachem Prime.
Re: Java fern propagation tips
Cutting the rhizome works, but it's slower than letting plantlets form naturally. I've had success with both methods in my 40 breeder. Just make sure your water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and under 20 nitrate. They're pretty chill plants, so don't stress too much.

Yep, timeon's got it right. I usually just let mine do their thing. Once the plantlets pop up, you can snip 'em off and glue 'em to some driftwood. Easy peasy. My tank's got a sponge filter and black sand, and they're thriving.
Re: Java fern propagation tips
How long does it usually take for the plantlets to show up? I've had mine for a month and nothing yet. Tank's at 78°F with a Nicrew light.
Re: Java fern propagation tips
It can take a couple months sometimes. If you're impatient, try cutting the rhizome like brookie mentioned. Works faster in my experience.
Re: Java fern propagation tips
I've noticed mine grow faster when I dose a bit of liquid ferts. Nothing fancy, just some API Leaf Zone every other week. Also, make sure they're not buried in the substrate. They'll rot if you do that.
Re: Java fern propagation tips
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try both methods and see what works best. Appreciate the help!
Re: Java fern propagation tips
Yeah, keep us posted. I'm curious to see which method you prefer. My bet's on the plantlets, but cutting's quicker if you're in a hurry.
