Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Looking for tank mates that won't mess with my Discus. Got a 75-gallon tank, sand substrate, and a bunch of driftwood. Water's at 84°F, pH 6.8, and I do 30% water changes twice a week. Anyone got suggestions for fish that'll chill with them?
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
I've had good luck with Cardinal Tetras. They're small, colorful, and don't bother the Discus. My tank's similar, 80 gallons, planted with Java Fern and Anubias. Cardinals stick to the middle, while the Discus hang near the bottom. Just make sure you get a school of at least 10 to keep 'em happy.
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Rummy Nose Tetras are another solid pick. They're peaceful and school tightly, which adds movement without stress. My 75-gallon has a canister filter, and the Rummies don't mind the flow. Just keep the temp steady—they like it warm like Discus.
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Thanks for the suggestions. Gonna check out both Cardinals and Rummies. My LFS has both, so I'll see which group looks healthier.
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Yep, health is key. I'd quarantine any new fish for a couple weeks, just to be safe. My last batch of Cardinals had no issues, but better safe than sorry.
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Agreed on quarantine. Also, avoid anything that nips, like Serpae Tetras. They might seem fine at first, but they can get sketchy. Stick to the chill ones like Corydoras for the bottom. My Sterbai Corys are great with the Discus.
Re: Discus tank mates for peaceful vibe
Totally. Corys are a no-brainer. They're active but peaceful, and they help keep the substrate clean. Just make sure your sand is fine-grained so they don't hurt their barbels.
