Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
I'm setting up a new 20 gallon planted tank and can't decide between Java Moss or Java Fern. Which one's easier to maintain, and do they have different lighting needs? My tank has moderate lighting and a basic CO2 setup.
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
Java Moss is way more chill, bro. It'll grow anywhere, even in low light. Java Fern needs a bit more attention, like proper anchoring and decent lighting. If you're lazy like me, go with the moss.
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
Java Fern is my pick. It's slower growing but looks way more structured. I've got mine tied to driftwood in a 30 gallon with medium light, and it's thriving. Just don't bury the rhizome, or it'll rot.
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
I killed both, lol. But my buddy says Java Moss is harder to mess up. Maybe I'll try that again. How often do you guys trim yours?
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
Thanks for the input. I think I'll start with Java Moss since it sounds more forgiving. Any tips on anchoring it to rocks?
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
If you change your mind later, Java Fern's rhizome can be glued too. I used gel super glue on mine, and it stuck fine. Just don't overdo the glue, or it'll look sketchy.
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
Wait, you can glue plants? That's wild. I've been trying to wedge them into stuff like a caveman.
Re: Java Moss vs Java Fern - thoughts?
Java Moss also grows like crazy if you give it decent light and CO2. I trim mine every couple weeks to keep it from taking over. It's great for shrimp tanks too.
